Introducing yourself and others.

A.   The most usual way of greeting someone in English is to say "Hello". You can continue the conversation by adding "How are you?" or another comment or question.

Examples:

1.         Hello, Faisal. How are you today?

2.         Hello, Yanis. Had a good day?

The greeting "Hello" can be used both in formal and informal situations.

 

B.    A more informal way of greeting someone is to say "Hi". This exclamation is used in informal situations when people who know each other meet.

Example:

Hi, Latif, How are you doing?

You can use the greeting "How do you do?"when you want to greet someone in a very formal way. This greeting is used only by people who are meeting each other for the first time.

 

C.        Introducing Yourself

The following are some expressions you can use to introduce yourself :

1.         Nice to meet you. I'm ....

2.         Pleased to meet you. I'm ....

3.         Let me introduce myself. I'm ....

4.         I'd like to introduce myself. I am ....

 

D.       Introducing Others.

Here are some expressions to introduce others :

1.         Nabila, please meet Baihaqi.

2.         Tania, this is Anthony, the one I told you about.

3.         Maria, have you met Irene?

4.         Here, I'd like you to meet Surya.

5.         Rere, this is Birawa. Birawa, this is Rere.

 

E.        Responses

The following are some useful responses you can say when you are being introduced :

1.         Nice to meet you.

2.         Pleased to meet you.

3.         How do you do?
